It was into the post-Cultural Revolution world of China in 1983 that a naïve young Londoner immersed himself on a Chinese language programme in Beijing. He needed to rapidly assimilate the language, values and thinking of the Chinese. And it was in this world that he met and fell passionately in love with an attractive Chinese eye doctor, Zhang Dong. A story of romance and perceived betrayal ensues against a background of the political developments in China at that period – including the trial of the ‘Gang Of Four’ and China’s first steps into a market economy. This richly descriptive biographical account discusses the role of history and culture in multicultural personal relations. The author exposes certain stereotypes that Chinese, Soviets (where he also studied) and Westerners had about each other, and poses deeper questions about the nature of ‘truth’.
